When the World Slows Down: A Holy Week Reflection From the Province

Growing up in the province, Holy Week has always felt like a pause button. The streets quiet down, stores close early, and the air itself feels more still, as if the whole island is taking a breath. It’s one of the few moments in the year when life slows, and many of us begin to reflect, whether we intend to or not.

In the Philippines, people observe Holy Week in different ways. Some take the opportunity to travel, making the most of the time out from work to visit beaches and nature spots. Others go back to their provinces, returning to the homes they left behind for work in the big city. For many, it becomes a time to gather with loved ones and pause from the busyness of everyday life.

And in these gatherings–on long bus rides, at home, over shared meals, or in late-night conversations–we find ourselves reconnecting not just with places, but with people.

As believers, this season is an opportunity to live missionally through quiet, intentional moments. We may find ourselves sitting beside a cousin who hasn’t been to church in years, or chatting with a former classmate who has questions about faith. We may meet old friends, relatives, or even strangers who carry burdens that we know only Jesus can lift.

Holy Week reminds us of the greatest story ever told, it’s the love of Christ displayed on the cross and the victory of His resurrection. But it’s not just a story to remember. It’s a story to share.

Whether we are traveling or staying put, catching up with old friends or meeting new acquaintances, let us keep our hearts attentive. Who might need encouragement? Who might be waiting for someone to speak words of life? Who around us is quietly searching for peace?

In Asia, where cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds intertwine, the Gospel often travels through relationships. We carry the Gospel not just through sermons, but through presence, through kindness, conversations, hospitality, and compassion. Holy Week gives us a window, a softened atmosphere where people may be more open to talk, ask, and listen.

Let’s not miss the opportunity.

May this week be more than just a break from school or work. May it be a time of being sent to family tables, to quiet reunions, to spontaneous chats under the stars. May we carry the message of the cross into every interaction, not forcefully, but faithfully.

A few ways to be missions-minded this Holy Week:

·      Reach out to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. Ask how they’re doing.

·      Share a meaningful Scripture or personal story with someone who might need encouragement.

·      Be available. Listen more, ask deeper questions, and be present in conversations.

·      Pray for opportunities to reflect Jesus’ love, even in small, subtle ways.

As the world slows down this week, let’s step into the stillness – not just to reflect, but to respond. We are people of the risen King. And this season, we go – not far, but faithfully – to those already near.
