A few weeks ago, my brother fractured his wrist in a fall. This meant I spent a few extra days at my sister's place where he was recovering. It was during these visits that I witnessed two separate incidents involving elderly people falling on the train on the same day.
The first happened on an escalator in the train station. An elderly man with a walking stick lost his balance and fell forward. Thankfully, the escalator had an automatic stop function which engaged immediately. With the help of a few kind strangers, the man was eventually assisted to safety. The second incident occurred inside a train. An elderly woman fell but luckily wasn’t hurt. A fellow passenger helped her up and stayed with her until she was able to disembark.
These two events made me reflect deeply. I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was a deeper meaning behind them. Then I remembered Hebrews 12:12-13, which talks about strengthening our feeble arms and weak knees.
Hebrews 12:12-13 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. Make level paths for your feet, so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.
Finding Strength in Challenging Times
These verses in Hebrews discuss overcoming challenges and hardships through faith in God. They remind us that just as the physical body can become weak and weary, so too can our spirit. Discouragement, disappointment, and struggles can all take a toll on our spiritual well-being. These feelings can hinder our ability to praise God and follow His path.
The two elderly people I witnessed falling reminded me that we all need help from time to time. There is no shame in asking for assistance when we are facing challenges. The second incident, where a passenger stayed with the elderly woman until she felt safe, highlighted the importance of offering support and compassion to others.
How to Strengthen Your Spiritual Core
So, how can we fortify ourselves spiritually? The answer lies in focusing on Jesus Christ. By continually worshipping Him, studying His teachings, remembering His blessings and seeking the support of our faith community, we can find the strength to overcome any obstacle.
Hebrews 12: 1-2: Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
Remember, you are not alone. There is a loving God who is always there for you, and a community of believers who are ready to offer encouragement and support. Reach out to your church, a small group, or a trusted friend for support and encouragement. Together, we can face any storm.
